Together with other Dolfan websites, MDBW today participated in a conference call chat with Miami Dolphins left guard Justin Smiley.
Not surprisingly, following last weekend’s astounding thrashing of the New England Patriots, it was a love-in!
The first question was “How did it feel to beat the crap out of the Patriots?!”
Justin responded that “It was an amazing feeling! Nobody gave us a chance and we spanked them. We dominated them in a way that no one could dispute the win.” He said he still hadn’t come down from it!
He said that to have lost this game would have been rough, going into the bye week still looking for his first win with the Miami Dolphins. However, he said that Coach Sparano was great before the game, was 100% confident that they could win, and fired them all up and gave them confidence. After it was over he said it felt like they had just won the Superbowl!
In response to a question regarding the Wildcat offense, and whether he expected it to be successful, Justin said that they had been working on it since training camp and there was a lot more to the formation. He said that the Patriots just weren’t ready for it. However, he said that whatever happened with the Wildcat they were determined to hit the Patriots in the mouth and keep hitting.
He said that the offensive line was unusually young, with he and Vernon Carey being the oldest at just 26 & 27. To dominate the Patriots defensive line was big following the first two games when a lot of mistakes were made. He said that the mindset before the game was that they weren’t going to accept any more bad play. Although mistakes were still made he said that it was a much improved performance. He described the way Satele and he overpowered Vince Wilfork to free up Ronnie for his 15 yd TD scamper. Apparently all the pregame chatter about how great Wilfork was had begun to get under his skin. His comment was that they “rolled his big butt outta there!”
With reference to the loss of Donald Thomas, Smiley was full of praise for the rookie right guard who, he said, was humble but playing like a veteran when he got injured. He said, “The loss of him hurt us, but it opened up the door for someone else”. According to Smiley, within the Dolphins locker room Thomas is compared to Brian Waters the three time pro-bowl Chiefs left guard.
In response to a question asking why he committed to signing with the 1-15 Dolphins so early in 2008, Smiley said that the Dolphins wasted no time in contacting him and letting him know how much they wanted him. “They wanted me”, he said, and there was no doubt about that. “There was no question, no wavering. I didn’t feel that San Fransisco wanted me like that”.
Judging by this interview and his play to date the Dolphins made a smart choice.
