Scouting has been a Perpetual Problem for Pitiful Miami Dolphins

Who picked Adrian Peterson for the Minnesota Vikings?
It’s not the owner.
It’s not the coach or his staff.
It’s the talent on the squad which determines the success or failure of a franchise.
What’s the old saying? You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear? Right. And a genius coach can’t make a Superbowl team if he doesn’t have the talent to work with.
Do you think Bill Belichick would be such a renowned genius without Tom Brady? Not a chance.
So who is it who determines the ultimate chances of success in the NFL?
Well, I guess logic says that it has to be the Director of Player Personnel, for it’s the Director of Player Personnel who usually has the final say on player selection. So, find the Miami Dolphins a gifted Director of Player Personnel Mr Huizenga, and you are on your way to the big game. Simple really.
Or is it?
Take the Minnesota Vikings for instance. They had the 8th pick in the Draft this year, and came up with an absolute gold nugget of a choice when they picked Adrian Peterson, who will carry them on his back through the coming years (assuming they can find a quarterback), maybe all the way to the Superbowl.
Great pick, right?! How many yards did he get last week? 296?!! Pure genius on the part of the Director of Player Personnel, right? Who the heck is that guy?
I’ll tell you who. He’s called Rick Spielman.
But wait a minute. Rick Spielman? Isn’t he the guy who got run out of Miami not long after Dave Wanndstache, for screwing up draft after draft for the Miami Dolphins?
Hmmmmm! There goes that theory.
So what is the answer? Pure luck?
Maybe.
Or is the Director of Player Personnel really more of an organizer, a bit of a figurehead, a final decision maker sure, but ultimately dependent on the quality of the material being fed to him by his staff of scouts and talent hunters?
That might be closer to the answer. And if it is, Mr Huizenga, may I suggest that you take a good long hard look at the folks who’ve been around surveying talent for you these past few years and coming up empty for the Miami Dolphins. If they are still around after all this lack of production you maybe need to know why.
