Passing on Troublemaker Stallworth was Correct Move for Dolphins
Donte Stallworth is a tough loss for any team. Being a first round draft pick says a lot about him. New Orleans used their first pick to get him and proved to be a good choice, scoring 18 Tds in his four-year tenure with the team. The 2006 season in Philadelphia produced 725 yds and 5 Tds, not a bad season for 12 games. A 19.1 yard average means he can be a big play guy when needed.
So why couldn’t the Miami Dolphins pull the trigger on the guy to get him, instead of letting the nemesis New England Patriots reel him in? Was it the money he wanted? New England gave him $33 million over 6 years with all kinds of goodies in between. This may only last a season because of the deal his agent wangled out. Stallworth sounds like he can be a distraction which nobody wants to deal with.
Can it be because he has been a player that does not take team meetings seriously by arriving late on several occasions, or could it be his reported substance abuse? He has been in the NFL’s Substance Abuse Program. So, he could be subjected to a league suspension if he were to violate the terms of the program again. Nobody needs that, especially not the Miami Dolphins.
This sounds to me like Coach Cameron knew what he was doing when he passed on Stallworth. The Dolphins do not need to spend that kind of money, they do not need pre-madonna’s, and they sure as hell do not need another drug user. Let someone else have that problem, and who better than The New England Patriots. We all know that The Patriots needed some WRs. I wish them all the best: NOT.
Yes Miami can use another quality WR after losing Welker and McMichael, but it is not a serious problem position. There will be a WR out there to pick up that Cameron will find. I am not sorry that we didn’t pick up Stallworth. I have a lot of faith in Miami’s Coach Cam Cameron, and it will be interesting the next few months.
