RODENBURG: Pass Defense a "Weakness"
First Test - Not so good. The biggest and most glaring weakness which I wrote about in my last article - the ability to stop the big pass plays, was exposed last night against an average offensive team. Last night was a complete failure towards this aspect of the game. The Fins defense gave up not one, not two, nor three but FOUR pass plays over 50 yards all resulting in touchdowns. A good team does not give up four pass plays of this length all season long nonetheless in one game. With three preseason games to go, much needed work must be done and improvement had if this team is to win and have a shot.
I am not here to pass blame or point a finger, whether it be a blown assignment, missed tackle, bad technique, a slip - these are all excuses - they happened and they must be fixed. At this point in time the pass defense is the "weakness" and will continue to be the Achilles heel of this football team.
Last night’s statistics for Jacksonville in the passing game:
14-27 for 321 yards, 4 tds vs 1 int. Average yard per completion - a staggering 22.93, average per attempt 11.88 yards, every time Jacksonville threw the ball it was for a first down.
If improvement is not had in the next two weeks, a significant move will need to be made by the front office or the fans expectations can be lowered.
Lets see what happens next week.
