  • Notes on the Dolphins' loss to Jacksonville

    Sunday, August 14, 2005
    Alistair Henderson
    MDBW Staff Writer

    Travis Daniels

Good coverage on Jacksonville's opening possession and Bowens gets the sack.

Sammy Morris starts at RB. Seth McKinney caught for a holding penalty 10yds spoils 2nd down. Frerotte sacked on third & 15. He wasn't ready for the snap.

Second Possession Chris Chambers makes an outstanding catch on 2nd and 7 Frerotte's long pass down the right sideline dropped by Chambers but the pass was delayed. If he'd caught it he would have had a TD.
Nice play by Daniels to break up a long pass to the right sideline by Leftwich. Didn't turn to look for the ball until the receiver did.

    Third Possession
Running play by Chambers gains 12 Nice run to the left outside by Ricky Circus catch by Chambers over the middle after Frerrotte is flushed out of the pocket. Bobbled as he was hit, caught it as he fell. Frerotte passes through the hands of Booker on sideline Nice run to the left by Ricky for 7 Shovel to Ricky doesn't work Turk punts into the end zone.
Third sack for Fins. Spragan pressure. Carter gets him. More pressure from this Miami defense which is starting to look kind of good. Leftwich almost sacked again as he throws it away.

    Fourth Possession
Pass on 1st down, then a delayed run to the left by Ricky for about 9 Ricky looks FANTASTIC. Another 10. on 3rd and 1 ends the first qtr. Jukes Jacksonville out of their boots!
Pass into endzone too far for Chambers
Sammy Morris back in for a run to the left. Gain of 4.
Dart to Welker to the right for a good gain and first down, but illegal formation against Stockar McDougle brings it back.
Great effort from Morris leaping for a 1st down. Acrobatics keeps the drive going.
    Great pass protection.
Nice catch and run by Boston.
Nice stutter by Ricky gains two out of nothing at the 12.
Wow!!! Frerotte almost intercepted, didn't get it quite high enough for an open Gilmore in end zone.
Pass into left edge of end zone to Welker is wide.
30 yd field goal by Mare is good.

Wow. Zach and Trayler for another sack! This defense is looking so much better.
Three and out. Good field position for Miami.

    Fifth possession
Feeley is in. Throws to Gordon for a 3 yd loss.
    Gordon runs for 1 yd.
Gordon takes a short pass to the Jacksonville 47, but not enough.
Turk punts to a fair catch at the 15.

Crowder is impressive in place of Seau.
Daniels is out with a hamstring [injury].
Madison almost picks one off and Saban spends a couple of minutes coaching him afterwards.
Nice play by Howard trying to intercept, but Pearman has a nice run through the middle.
Sack by Jason Glenn forces Jacksonville back, but they follow it with a long pass for a first down at the Miami 35.
Gain of 4 running on 1st down, but more pressure from Miami forces a bad throw to nobody on 2nd down.
Illegal block in the back springs a big run, but it comes back. 3rd & 18.
Wow, they RAN for a 1st down!!
This second unit can't stop the run.
TD Jacksonville off a tipped pass.

AJ, all the time in the world, throws it away.
AJ picked off by Terry Cousin, may have been out of bounds. He was.

    Half Time
Nick Saban says the 1st units did well but mental errors are a problem as players learn the system. Praised Ricky.

    Second half
Gordon starts by fumbling his first carry which Jacksonville recover, then take down for a field goal. Credit the defense for holding them. Nice almost interception by Glenn.

Miami's next possession, both Diamond and Newson had excellent receptions and yards after. Minor messed his chance up though dropping an easy reception then running for nothing stops the drive

Glenn just grabs the runner's legs to stop a big gain.
Jacksonville 2nd unit looks better than Miami's as they grind their way down to the Miami 37, 3:39 left in 3rd.
Miami have a weakness in the middle of the 2nd team D line. J are running through at will. Also they seem open to the long pass.
Travares Tillman did a nice job breaking up the goalline pass on 3rd and goal. J settle for a field goal.

Feeley long pass downfield intended for Newson is intercepted. Looked like it was overthrown but Newson didn't give it a lot of effort. That might be it for Feeley.

Manuel Wright is huge. He bulldozes his opponent, almost had a sack as the qb tried to run upfield but he was a tad slow. Good effort by D. J have to punt. Feeley will come back in.

Feeley overthrows No 16 by a mile on 3rd down.

J come back with some big pass plays including a circus catch off a long pass which was almost intercepted by #35 Billy Parker, then a TD pass into the end zone to 6'6" receiver over Lance Schulters.

Sod it! Josh Davis dropped a TD.
TD!!! Rosenfels to Rader on 4th down!! Impressive drive by Rosenfels.

Onside kick didn't work with 5 minutes to go. J start on the 46 yd of Miami.

Vickerson and Wright in the middle for the D line.
J wide open for a long pass but receiver dropped it. Bua got there late.
Fake punt pass brilliantly defended by Newson.

Berlin is in. 3 minutes left. 1 time out left.
    Berlin looks very sharp again.
Fluttered one out to Farmer, low and wide. No chance.
    Miscommunication, overthrown.
Bad snap, Berlin has to grab it off the ground and run with it. Nowhere.
    4th down
Mann catches an amazing reception off a 40 yd pass from Berlin to the J 12, and then Mann pulls in another amazing catch in the endzone for a TD right on the sideline. Great throw only Mann could get. Look out Feeley!

    Onside kick recovered by J
    27-17 Jacksonville

    Saban's comments:

"Pleased with the way that the firsts Defense played, but we have issues with the depth on our team. We got better pressure on the qb with the first guys in there. It's a work in progress. We aren't disappointed in where we are."
