Post Chad Henne's First Start Compared the Greatest

Quote:
Tom Brady got rocked in his second career NFL start after the Patriots lost Drew Bledsoe for the season. He was playing the Miami Dolphins in a loud and packed Pro Player Stadium in 100 degree South Florida September heat. He was sacked four times, and fumbled at the one-yard line, gift-wrapping a touchdown for Jason Taylor and the Dolphins. He was only 12 for 24 (50%), and had a disappointing 86 yards passing (the third lowest total of his career—coincidently, the first and second lowest have also come against the Dolphins).

The Dolphins won that game handedly, 30-10.

Chad Henne won his first start. The Dolphins came to play for him and wollopped the Buffalo Bills 38-10. His numbers (16/22, 115 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT) weren’t that flashy, but they were exactly what offensive coordinator Dan Henning and the coaching staff expected of him. By the way, Brady’s first start was equally as underwhelming—13/23, 168 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT—I simply used his second game against the Dolphins to illustrate the start of his career because it had more… let’s say… bite.

Nice bunch of stats MD.

I think the point is that new QBs, however good they promise to be, need to be eased in gradually. They will make mistakes. Henne has already thrown a pick 6, but that is inevitable. To succeed a rookie QB needs a decent line to give him some protection, a strong ground game to take the pressure off, and some QB friendly receivers. At Miami Henne has (mostly) all three.

The only thing he really lacks is a deep threat, although I'm not sure that the O line is yet quite good enough to provide the protection he needs. We'll see, but for now Chad Henne seems to stack up well with the best of them.

It wouldn't surprise me to see him have a second start a bit like Tom Brady's.

The Bills were a banged up, TOroubled squad, and the Jesters will be very different. They will blitz the heck out of him like the Ravens did to Pennington last year, and so far our O line hasn't shown much in pass protection or the ability to pick up blitzes. Six sacks to the Bills is pretty miserable.

Hopefully we can catch them with some screen passes. It doesn't seem so long ago when I used to be praying for defenses to blitz Marino, because you knew with his quick reads and release he could usually find an open receiver.

Hopefully that will be Henne someday soon, but right now it's going to be tough and probably a bit ugly against the better teams.

You are correct, and it wouldn't be surprising. However, I think this team is a lot more talented than it has let on so far, and that includes the offensive line. That line wants nothing more than to shut down this revamped Jets defense. They know this isn't the same team they faced last year even though a lot of the players are the same.

I am hoping for the best in this game, and I will be very very disappointed if we do not perform well. Henne knows what his job is, and he isn't going to try and force anything. He knows to throw the ball away on third down if there's nothing there, and he knows to take a sack rather than launch the ball into coverage. My main concern for him is his defensive reads, and how well he has done this week in his film study. I'm sure Pennington has been right by his side.

I am now more interested in hearing about some great stats from Henne's second NFL start.
