No, Scott Mitchell was not a rookie when he started for the Dolphins. He served as Dan Marino's back up before finally starting in 1993 when Dan the Man was injured. He played well and was eventually traded to Detroit.

Bob Griese is correct v. the Chiefs in Sept 1967, two of the four listed by Zacho are correct.

Yes, Scott was one of my first guesses also, but he was a backup QB for several seasons before taking over for Marino. I remember him playing real well too and never understood why we let him go. However in hindsight, he didn't do very well in Detroit so maybe we sold high with him.
Wasn't George Wilson our first head coach?

George Wilson jr 1966 just before Greise, didn't work out. His dad was the coach then

There must be a QB that started and left just after he started. I have been through the list of starters sinnce 1966.
This one is gonna take some digging. Got my shovel ready.

Well, you guys have actually named five of the six, Beck, Marino & Griese, plus two included in the four you named earlier Zacho.

Didn't relize but Woodley should be one. The other is Rick Norton but sucked real bad, and Strock. Theisman never started a game as a rookie for us I don't think. I can't figure out the sixth.
Griese
Norton
Strock
Marino
Woodley
Beck

Pretty good Zacho, but Don Strock didn't start in his rookie year. He was drafted in 1973 in the 5th Round but didn't start until 1975, when he started 3 games. Overall he played 14 years for your Miami Dolphins, and started 14 games. He played one season with Cleveland in 1988 before he retired.
Well well well, what a good question! Took us all a while, didn't it! Good job Zacko.

Hang on not so fast
It has to be John Stofa, who started 1 game in 66 when Miami was still in the AFL.

OK, you got them.
They are:
Rick Norton vs Jets in Sep 1966
John Stofa vs Houston in Dec 1966
Bob Griese vs Kansas in Sep 1967
David Woodley vs New Orleans in Sep 1980
Dan Marino vs Bufallo in Oct 1983 and
John Beck vs Philadelphia in Nov 2007
(Note the 24 year gap between Marino and Beck)

Well that wasn't too hard. You just needed to look up Marino's Records.
In 1984 Dan Marino set these 6 records:
Most Yards Gained – 5084 (Still a Record)
Most Games 400 or More Yards Passing – 4 (Still a Record)
Most Games 300 or More yards – 9 ( Moon tied 1990, Warner tied 1999 & 2001; Gannon broke in 2002 with 10)
Most TD Passes – 48 (Broken by Manning with 49 in 2004 and then Brady with 50 in 2007)
Most games 4 or More TD Passes -6 (Tied By Manning in 2004)
Most Consecutive Games 4 or More TD Passes – 4 (Broken by Manning in 2004 with 5)
In 1984 he also tied Dan Founts for Most Consecutive Games 400 or More Yards Passing – 2

Nice work FF, but I was referring to DOLPHINS team NFL records, not a player's records.
However, 1984 is of course correct. And most passing yards gained would be correct. But there are five other TEAM NFL records that the Dolphins offense established in 1984.

You've been doing your homework Zacho!

Most points scored? Not sure about that one. Do you have any research on it?
Total yds is right, though I have 6,936 (nit picker I know!)
1st downs is right.
I have two other offensive records for that season.
FinsFan
03-02-2009, 12:35 PM
1) Most Passing Yards (5018) in a season is no longer a record. St. Louis broke it in 2000 with 5232.
2) The Number of Passing TDs was 49. This too is not a current record. Both Indy (2004) and NE (2007) broke the record.
3) Most TDs - 70. NE Broke the record in 2007 with 75.
4) Most (1-pt) after TD - 66 (Broken by NE in 2007 with 74)
The above 4 are clearly Offense Records. These next 2 are more Team Records and not Offense in particular.
1) Most Consecutive Seasons Leading League, Fewest Yards Penalized - 8. They still hold this record.
2) Most Seasons Leading League, Fewest Yards Penalized - 11. They still hold this record at 13 now.
Finally here is a record that the team tied with and later broke.
1) Tied Most Seasons Leading League, Fewest Penalties - 9. In 1984 Miami tied Pittsburgh with Most Seasons Leading League, Fewest Penalties at 9. Miami now holds the record at 13.

Most First Downs - 387
Ok, and Zacko mentioned that one.
Looking at these recent posts made me aware that in 1984 the Dolphins where a major offensive power not matched by any team since then. Yes St. Louis, Indy, and NE had great seasons in 2000, 2004, 2007 respectivly. Niether of those team' s offense as a whole came close to the 1984 Dolphins.
Out of those 6 offensive records NE broke three of them in 2007, St. louis broke 2 in 200 and Indy only broke one in 2004. They also did not set any other significant Offensive record that Miami did not already hold. For some of you older "white haired" fans this is basic information. But for those of us who where still is High School and interested in Girls more than football, this was an enlightening subject. Thanks for the new perspective on the 1984 Dolphins. Sadly we got crushed in the SB, but at least we where there.

What season did the Dolphins have their highest average actual attendance and what was that average?
It's true, and you can also narrow it down to Marino's 84 season. He set attempts, completions, yards, and touchdowns records that are only being individually broken by certain players. That man was a magician and I wish I could have watched his whole career.

Yes, I think Jimmy had a lot to do with Dan retiring, but Dan wasn't the same after his injury anyway. Jimmy did however drastically improve our Defense. My knowledge about the Jimmy years may be rough, but didn't he bring in Zack, JT, Surtain, and Sam Madison. Yes, he made many mistakes, but we have seen much worse since he left.
