It’s been a while since the Dolphins have gone into their first training camp scrimmage with absolutely no question at starting quarterback. 14 years to be exact. However, tonight, not only are the Dolphins assured of their second-year starting quarterback, but Ryan Tannehill is performing like he’s expected to.
Both starting receivers, Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline, did not practice tonight. Wallace was given the night off and Hartline tweaked his calf in warmups (presumed to be non-serious). Reporters speculated coaches were exercising caution with their two starters after losing Armon Binns for the season with a torn ACL/MCL and Rishard Matthews for an extended period of time.
Unofficially, Tannehill went 8 for 11, 72 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions tonight. The Touchdowns went to Dustin Keller, Charles Clay, and Daniel Thomas. Not only was Tannehill efficient, but he did his work against a swarming defense. There are multiple reports that people “lost count” of the number of sacks the Dolphins defense got tonight. Included in that sack total was Dion Jordan’s first this training camp after he blew by Will Yeatman. Other defenders with sacks included Olivier Vernon, Reshad Jones (2), Koa Misi, and A.J. Francis.
Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas didn’t show much in the way of yards tonight, but Miller had a goal line TD run, and Thomas had the TD reception from Tannehill. Jonas Gray also had 4 carries for 13 yards and a couple of catches for 17.
The excitement is definitely perforating through South Florida
as a large crowd of 22,876 showed up to watch tonight’s practice. The Miami Marlins are averaging 17,673 per game if that’s any comparison in popularity.
While rookie Caleb Sturgis sat out practice again nursing a groin injury, Dan Carpenter missed wide left from 49 yards out and had an extra point blocked (no word on who blocked the XP). Carpenter connected on his other two attempts, including one from 50 yards out. Brandon Fields looks in mid-season form, booting his first punt through the endzone 64 yards away.
Marcus Thigpen fumbled a punt inside the 10 yard line, but also had a 65 yard punt return touchdown, and a 45 yard kickoff return according to Armando Salguero
Wide Receiver Depth
Salguero also tweeted that Chad Bumphis had a nice night
with two late grabs for 41 yards from Pat Devlin, and Marvin McNutt hauled in 3 catches for 23 yards. The Dolphins are reported to have scheduled a workout with free agent wide receiver Laurent Robinson on Tuesday.
